It is possible that a separation can save a marriage by allowing the couple to realize how much they miss and really care for each other. Although it is not a major cure for resolving all marital problems separation from each other can show the couple that they want to stay together. The stress and challenges of everyday married life can have a negative influence on even the most devoted relationship. This sometimes causes couples to see whether separation can allow them to solve their differences. Sometimes the reason a couple who is having marital problems will separate is because their religious beliefs or cultural beliefs do not allow them to get a divorce. A marriage separation may be able to help save a marriage under certain conditions. If the couple ever did have a good loving relationship to start with, it is possible that a temporary separation could help resolve their problem. If problems could be worked out before they had a chance to escalate into an all out war, perhaps it could head off a divorce. A separation will give the partners time to clear their minds and begin to work on their difficulties while apart. You may want to begin your visits alone, then start going to counseling together. Don’t try to stay apart for an indefinite amount of time because this could prove to be disastrous to your goals. Keep in touch with each other but limit the number of times to be in contact. Perhaps limit your phone contact to once a week, during which time you can email one another. Naturally, you do not want to begin dating other people during the separation period this would ultimately defeat your purpose. What should be taking place during this time is both partners taking time to address the problems which brought them to the place where they are now. Go out with friends or relatives for recreational activities. Being shut off from other people can cause depression. Also keep in mind that the separation will only be a temporary situation.
